First Razor to Hone
Hello all,
I recently aquired a Zartina Cutlery vintage straight. It is in great shape, and sharp, but not sharp enough to shave with, not on my steel wool of a beard anyway.
I am looking into a hone to bring this Razor into prime cutting condition, and was wanting to get some suggestions. I have currently been looking at the Norton 4K/8K waterstone. Would I need more than that to accomplish this task?
Thanks
Jon

That's all you really need. IIRC that's how Lynn started off.
Get proficient with that one before you move on to the fancy stuff. You may want a Chromium Oxide pasted strop for a more sophisticated edge.Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr.

Thanks Kees.
Actually I am just worried about making a smooth cut without pulling more than anything. For now that will suffice. I will worry about Fancy later.

The most important hone you need to buy is the Norton 4/8K

I suggest getting a 10x loupe ("triplet diamond loupe" is the magic phrase). That way, you'll be able to see (as well as feel) the condition of the edge.
If you need a 1K stone, you'll see a rounded edge, not a sharp edge.
