Thanked: 5Mystery Hone
Gents, I present for your pleasure and delight, and for my edification, education and enlightenment, the celebrated Mystery Hone shrouded in, of all things, a jewellery box!
Any ideas? Haven't bought it yet, so this is the only pic I have.

Can you make the picture bigger? It's hard to see the way it is.
Thanks!

I'm sorry but there is too little information to give you any realistic guess. Should you buy it, I look forward to seeing images with greater clarity and possibly the dimensions of the stone in order to assist with its identification. Please do lap the stone and report the colour of the slurry. Wet and dry pictures will also be of great help.

What are the dimensions? Does it have a history? i.e. Bob Big Barbershop...
Chucks Carpentry Emporium... Estate sale... Moving sale....
If the price is right... take a risk.

Thanked: 5More pics - seller said there were some chip on the bottom of the stone. These clarify the clour of the stone. It is not as Olive green as I thought.
Buler are a make of watch so this is a watch case I guess - puts size at about 8" maybe a bit bigger? Could that staining be slurry (greenish?)
Thankfully something for scale...spot the pen Think that's a mouse. Could be as big as 9"x2" ? Is it Welsh Slate? Or (holds breath) a Charnley maybe? <prays>
edit: just spotted the A4 paper - so 8" x 1.5" - 2" maybe..

I don't recognize it as a CF, it looks softer and more opaque. (English) Slate perhaps the type that often has straight transitions?
It could still be a nice and useful stone.

CF's are really hard. The stone pictured has had some damage to it. I'd bet it isn't a CF everyday of the week. Especially, since Piet doesn't think it's a charnley

I'm certain it is not a Charnley. The size and colour are wrong, although it needs cleaning and lapping. It is also too shallow. Charnleys are (usually) chunky stones. If it is of UK origin, I would suspect it is some variety of slate, but under the muck who knows?
