The DMT does not need to be flattened. It comes flat and will still flat, it's essentially a metal plate with diamonds fixed to the surface.

That DMT is maining used for Flatening, Lapping, Cleaning, Conditioning all the other stones/hones but if by chance later you have serious Restoration work on an edge to do it works pretty good there too.. I also sharpens knives pretty quick
