Thread: Col Conk Arkansas?

I picked up a deal for $53.00 for a razor, strop, and a white Arkansas new in the box from someone selling a new in set kit on ebay. Now I know Conk stuff is just rebranded Dovo so I didn't mind the razorand stop (both pretty good, even though Dovo sells strops like pakistan ties...about twoinches to short).....but anway I digress, the hone was glued to a paddle and very rough looking. I thought what the heck, I will give it try.... Lapped it and put it to work on a frame back le coultre that I just polished up. And surprisingly it put a very quick edge on it. So all in all, nota bad stone. I think I might try some more Arkansas rocks like tht translucent one? Anyone ele using Arkansas stones with success? Keep in mind I am not a hone miester so keep the Stone pelting down to a minimum.

i have been playing around with them for a few years and just rescentley i have been geting great resluts with them. i have a blue black, and a translucent, they are great finishers when you get the best edge you can off other hones, then take them to the trans. to finish it i ues lamp oil on mine .

I use Smith's soft and hard arkansas stones; they work quite well for me too.

Ive used surgical black and translucent Arkansas stones followed with Chinese 12k with pretty good results despite being a beginner.

I used a surgical black Arkansas for many years for finishing my razors. They can leave the edge amazingly keen and smooth. Lap it to the highest grit you can and use a thin oil such as sewing machine oil.

i think that should be white ark stone similar to paddle strop.
i have used long time ago and as Ronnie brown mention use them as a finisher.
you will have good edge.

On "another forum" someone mentioned using a translucent Arkansas with diluted dish washing liquid instead of oil.

I Tried that and was suprised at how well it worked,give it a shot ,you might like it,I also use a drop at the end of flattening a stone,just to get any residue off,worked wonders on my Thurrigan

Adding a little dish detergent or shaving soap breaks water's surface tension. On the hone it's like a water thinner... your blade isn't cushioned as much from the grit as it is with plain water. I've noticed a big difference between water only and water/soap on my Thuringian.

That - and it keeps the stone's surface from clogging.. not entirely like what oil does but it's close enough for me...

Chug should - IMO - come before the Ark, not after.. at least here with my set up that's how it would go if I was going to use both....
