Thanked: 14stone ident
Hey,
this is the very first honing stone I got from my grandfather well over 10 years ago, which he himself has had for many years before that
However i've never quite managed to identify exactly which grit it's got, or what type of stone it is.
judging by how even it is, i'd imagine it to be a synthetic, but I have absolutely no idea what the grit is :/
it produces a light gray slurry and has a purple/brown/red-ish mixed colour around the sides.
it sparkles quite nicely in the light.
it auto-slurries quite readilly.
I've tried lapping it before taking the picture, but after completely wearing trough 4 sheets of norton sanding paper, I gave up on that and just took the pics :P
hoping the images retain their resolution when attaching them here.. if not,
(Warning, these files are around 5MB in size each)

I actually won't be much help lol but I would lap it and re post some photos. They generly come up very different once they have been freshly lapped and it will most likely make it easier to identity
It looks synthetic to me though too, if its synthetic it may be a lot harder to identity
What sandpaper grit did you use to lap it? I have found the easiest way to lap is on a $10 piece of glass and using some lapping powder.Last edited by Brighty83; 09-11-2011 at 02:18 PM.

I get mine from my local woodworking shop but this is what it is Buy Veritas Lapping Powder (4oz) from Axminster, fast delivery for the UK
You can get a range of grits.
I actually just started a thread on it http://straightrazorpalace.com/honin...tml#post847355Last edited by Brighty83; 09-11-2011 at 05:01 PM.
