Is a superfine grit stone like the Chinese 12k good for touchup work or will it overpolish?

Yes mine is, but always understand that Natural stones are just that Natural and therefore just because mine works really really good doesn't mean yours will...
I have now owned 4 *PHIG's and have honed on 8 only 2 out of those 8 would I consider really really good some were downright bad, and some were ok...

*PHIG= People's Hone of Indeterminate Grit

It will work as a touch up hone. Well, most of them will.
The Guangxi hones can vary a bit as I understand it.
They are a bit on the slow side though, so a barber hone or a 12K Naniwa would be better, IMHO.

or a Shapton GS 16K. If you have a PHIG, hang on to it and revisit it later once you have touching up a razor down. You may or may not like a PHIG.

+1 for the Shapton 16000 as a touchup or finisher.
I have collected several barber hones over the last 5 months; none have matched the Shapton 16K, YMMV.

I think the Chinese 12K can be used for touch ups. They are definitely different as indicated. When I have used mine for touch ups, I usually will do 10 laps with a light slurry and then 10 more with just water and see if it works. No pressure on the strokes. Surprisingly, this will do just fine in many cases. You may want to follow up with a paste or spray, but it may not be necessary either. I have found the Naniwa 12K and the Shapton on glass 16K as mentioned above to be very consistent for touch ups. Usually just 10 no pressure X strokes on water does the job on either.

I have a PHIG and seem to have lucked out with it. I make some slurry on it with my dmt and then do 10 strokes on each side and add some water till it's about clear and do 10 more. Then I add water till its really clear and do 5-10 more on it. I can comfortably shave off that edge without stropping but stropping makes it nicer.

I've been experimenting with Crox liquid on the C12k hone. As the other's said, There are variances in the C12k's because they are natural. The Chromium oxide liquid acts like a steroid. Actually, The hone I use is not really the Woodcraft C12k. It's similar, a friend in Hong Kong sent me a stone. It's very similar to the C12k, but faster. As far as overpolishing, The C12k is slow. A slurry will speed things up.

imo your better with a barber hone, they are a superfast clean cutter, (5 swipes and your done) and they a alot more reliable than a natural stone as far as grit goes. just my openion

Do you have experience with the stones mentioned?
