Thanked: 13245TZ yer getting into the realm of what is sometimes referred to as "Analysis Paralysis" where you start to over think things, rest assured that any of the 1k's will work just fine, even for professional honing, I have used a Norton 1k on over 3000 razors easily in fact I wore one out and I am well into my second one
The only "wrong" choice for razors IMHO of all of them is the DMT 1200 and there are people that would argue that point with me too Pick the system that fits your budget the best, and as you have seen from many of us if you can in any way fit a 8x3 DMT 325 plate into that budget it will be worth it.

Glen, I'm actually content with the King 1k for my needs. I was trying to be sneaky and avoid all of the "extras" for now. It looks like I'm forced to get the DMT 325 (D8C), a holder, and the King 1k, which puts me ~ $120, if purchased at Woodcraft.

Thanked: 13245Yep I am seeing 26.99 for the King and 64.99 on the DMT
the holder is the cheapest here Amazon.com: Steelex D1091 Sharpening Stone Holder: Home Improvement that I have found anyway
You can find the DMT for in the low $50's online and the King for $19 but with shipping it will pretty much be a wash I am assuming you can walk into a Woodcraft store...
ps: You can always use 320 grit wet-r-dry but it is messy and time consuming, but it works just fine, BTW if yer married leaving the sandpaper, flat plate, and red stone mess in the laundry room sink is detrimental to a good marriageLast edited by gssixgun; 10-28-2011 at 05:44 PM.

Thanked: 199As Glen said, MANY of us have invested in the D8C (325) and yes, it is worth the expense. Look it up on Amazon, they usually have good prices and usually qualifies for the free shipping. I would spend the money for the D8C any day over the other lapping options out there.

In the long run, the D8C is cheaper than going through all that sandpaper too. Something else to consider, plus the big mess & waste part.

+1 on the DMT. Only stone I NEVER regretted buying. There are a lot of stones I have sold and bought again, but never the DMT, that stone is the foundation of a well made honing station
