Hey guys,
I have two stones here, one is is definitely a llyn idwal and the other im guessing is a charnley forrest.
One is a brown\grey and the other is a blue\grey so can anyone tell me what is what and confirm these stones?

I may be wrong....it's happened before.
But neither of those look like a Charnley to me. I do have limited experience, but from what I've read and seen, Charnlies can have those characteristic deep red splotches or streaks, OR they can be totally green...almost like the green on an old copper roof...a dull clover green.
Again, I said I'm probably wrong....
I'll be back to check out what the other's say, who have more experience with them.....
I may not have a CF there, I'm only throwing it out there as i know the idwal stones and the CF stones get confused some times... And there is a lot of confusion with these two stones lol
I guess the second stone could be called a green\grey too, not blue. What ever the color is, its only has a hint mixed with the grey. I have another stone the same as the second that i can post if that helps..? Or add more confusion hehe
I purchased the brown\grey one off eBay as an Idwal but i was told that the blue\green\grey (ish) stone is an Idwal on SRP a few months ago but others at the time said it could be a CF.

None of the stones look like a Charnley Forest. The pics are too small to identify them properly, some close-ups would help. Grecian hones are a possibility too.
neither looks like CF to me too.
Better pics for sure will help.

And I thought this thread was about Charnleys vs idwals for honing :p Are the 2nd and 3rd stones fine like a charnley? If the answer is yes, the name doesn't matter, they are great finishing hones. All three could be idwal stones, if you are not sure, check if the 2 others are as hard (or fine, or the feeling of the razor on the hone while honing) as the first.

So, are they finer? Softer? Have you shaved after honing on them, how are they compared to the idwal? The middle one looks like a slate type, not like the idwals, but I guess I'm wrong.
They all produce an edge 16k+ and i can pass a HHT from all 3
They are very very close to each other in feel, no.1 has some small cracks through it and is a little more slate like then the others, 2 and 3 have no cracks or signs of cracking (they are very uniform) They are very hard stones but not Arkansas hard. The hardness is somewhere in the middle of a translucent Arkansas and a thuringen

I know none of them are likely to be CF as there is no red but if they aren't i still need names, what stone would most likely be the idwal out of the three? and then what is the other stone(s)?
I thought Lynn Idwall was a country singer back in the 50's. As far as I can remember Charlie Forest was also a country singer, well-known for his upbeat version of "Run into the Roundhouse, Nellie, 'cuz they cannot corner you in there".
Translucent arkansas is the hardest stone (as far as I know, with Llyn idwal) and Thuringians are the softest (and the aoto I have). CF are hard, the same goes for the Grecian hones. They look like natural UK hones, I don't know what they might be. If they are 16k+ estimated grit, I don't know any other so fine finisher from England. They kind of look like WOA, but I don't think they are. An old test is to try scratching them with a copper wire (not coins), if nothing happens to the stone, it is CF or LI. If they get scratched, they are something else.
Can you show close ups of those cracks?
The spotted one fits the description of the elusive and perhaps even legendary Cutler's Green, a fabled stone that is said to be green with sparse dark blue dots. Memorael claims it to have white streaks among its green background.
In any case, I don't believe either of those are Charnleys ("CF"). Having handled a few and seen even more belonging namely to Adrspach, none of them have resembled your specimens. Lynn Idwall ("LI)? Possibly one of them is, but I'm leaning more towards Greican hones, as Piet suggests. I fear however, every British stone that is green to grey with dots etc that can not be positively identified as a CF or LI will be deemed to be a Greican hone, examples of which including one of my own are in the thread annexed hereto.

Here's a good picture of what I think is a Llyn Idwal. This happens to be a slipstone but I also have 2 really big ones just like it and 2 with a different diagonal speckles pattern one of which is also a slipstone. These are glassy, extremely hard and pretty fine when lapped properly.
The dark swirls at the left can easily be seen but you have to get a closer look to notice the speckles which make up all the swirls.
