I have at least three finishers: 16K Shapton on glass, Brown Escher, and my J-Nat (Nakayama Maruichi). I gave my beautiful Coticule away(sob!) In my experience, there is not one finisher for all razors. Each razor will need a certain finisher to produce that ultimate edge for you. The trick is determining which finisher will be best for whatever razor you happen to be honing. Everybody has there favorites and I can't obviously answer your question. I suppose you will get many different answers from many of our honers here.
I use a microscope when honing. - I have experimented with different finishers, and yes, I can see a difference in the edge from razor to razor in regard to which finisher will produce the edge I am looking for. If you are looking for one, I couldn't answer that, but I bet Lynn could. He has used them all. The question would be, "Lynn, we are sending you to a desert island where you can hone all the razors you want for the rest of your life. - but you can only take one finisher with you. and what would that be?
Good Luck,
Steve

Thanked: 15I've been finishing everything on a blue Thuringian; I've tried some finer grit natural and synthetic stones but prefer the edge I get off the Thuringian. To add context, all the razors I've honed are vintage/antique and are mostly Sheffields with a few Germans thrown in for good measure.

Depends on which stone is winking at me that day: any of my coticules, big escher or jnats.
Lately I've liked my coticules.

I only use my "welsh thuringian". Of course, it's the only finisher I have, so my choices are kinda limited.

Thanked: 34I have been using a vintage cuticle for all my razors, and either a nani 12k or thuringian for others blades.
For some reason i just prefer the cuticles edge personally.

It all depends on the razor and my mood.
Lately I have used my Okudo JNat a lot since it's the newest one in the stable and I'm getting to know it.
I'm starting to get quite a few different finishers after a couple fellow members (you know who you are!!!) triggered my HAD for real and all get their share of use, I like to try out the different finishers to see which suits what razor best.Last edited by Zephyr; 07-14-2012 at 09:22 PM.
