    Default Hone closeups

Thought I'd take some macro pics of some of the hones I've collected. I realise that this has probably already been done, but I thought this might serve as a point of interest to some and perhaps contribute to more accurate ID of some of my hones.

I'll try and get my microscope cam working soon and take some much closer pictures at a later time.

The closeups are x2.5 of a 1:1 macro shot of the hone. Roughly x20 magnification.

    German Hones

From the looks of it, the Grey Escher (from Joe Edson) is the smoothest, though I'd not lapped the escher and the other hones were lapped on a 600 grit DMT plate and used on a few razors afterwards.

    That MST Thuringian - well it's a decent pre-polisher

    UK Hones:

The Black Slate and Green hone had been lapped on 5k Grit sandpaper.

The Charnley, Purple Slate and ToS had been lapped on 600 grit DMT plate and used on a few razors.

The Black Slate is interesting - in that it looks like a slightly coarse Thuringian (it is).

The Charnley looks coarse (it is) and the Purple slate in between the Black Slate and Charnley, except it's soft so it acts more gently (it does).

The Tam O Shanter I think I need to revisit - I've not used it much as a piece came out and I've not gotten round to lapping it again. It does look quite fine.

The Green hone - well, it's perfectly smooth, but very hard. Oil and gentle pressure on soft steel I think.

    Japanese Hones

Both these finishers were lapped on 5k grit sandpaper.

The Shoubudani has been used as a one stone hone with Botan, Tenjou, Mejiro and Tomo Nagura on a razor.
The Ozuku I don't think so.

The Ozuku clearly looks smoother - a very fine stone!

The Shoubudani feels as smooth during honing so those little pockets don't detract from getting a mirror polish on a razor and the edge was very satisfactory when using it.

Thanks for the cool spread. The stone you refer to as a Tam looks like a Dalmore Blue to me.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
