Thanked: 10Is this a good honning set??
I'going to buy a couple of razors from SRD, maybe the special tortoise and the reinassance,, but what do you think about this set of hones to maintain my razors for life,,
Naniwa 12k
Norton 4000-8000 stone
DMT 325 for lapping
Chromium oxide paste
Is that enough?? do you recommend something else or to remove something'? what do you think folks??
thank you alll

Thanked: 993I'd say that's a good set to get quite a bit of honing and touching up done.
The fun is going to be in learning how to use them.
May I suggest 1 at a time? Learn a grit, then add a variable? Start with your highest one....get really comfortable shaves off of the 12k from touch-ups, and then put it away......for a while.
Get comfortable shaves from learning to max out the 8K, and then....then add the 12k back into the mix. Learning all those hones at once will be like trying to crawl, walk, ride a bike, and drive a car, get married, and have kids....all in the same week.

+1 maxi, I've been that route, and it's a rough road...
I found that playing with razors that have a good bevel is the best place to start. Work your way up to a true dull edge that requires a bevel. Bevel setting is the hardest for newbies, just ask me!!!
Great combination to get started on!!! Good luck!
p.s. Get a barbers hone if you like polishing up your razors between honing.
M-- Any day I get out of bed, and the first thing out of my mouth is not a groan, that's going to be a good day --

I think that you could do almost anything with that set up except for larger bevel problems. Even with the norton 4k you could raise a slurry to make it more aggressive if needed with your DMT but I would think about getting a decent 1k, King or chosera.
Edit: I just read on the razors you are getting. You won't need to get a 1k if you stay on top of those. Nice razor choices too. Best of luck!Last edited by Kingfish; 12-18-2011 at 10:42 PM.

Thanked: 1936My first question for you is how long have you been shaving? I ask this because you need to get that down first & foremost.
Once you have shaving down, then I concur what the gentlemen have said about touching up a razor with the 12K or a barber stone & moving down in "grit" as your honing skills progress.Southeastern Oklahoma/Northeastern Texas helper. Please don't hesitate to contact me.
Thank you and God Bless, Scott

Thanked: 11It looks like a good solid setup to me. If you plan on buying razor from ebay, flea markets, etc. a 1k or some other lower grit will make life much easier, but I wouldnt worry about that until the time comes.
