    Default Ceramic plates

Ladies ceramic straightening tongs, SWMBO has two sets of these, and I got to thinking that maybe the ceramic plates in them might be usable as finishing hones, unfortunately I can't investigate this as both her sets are uber expensive and are guarded with a ferocity that borders on manic.

Has anyone out there considered this? I have had a close look and the plates as far as I can tell seem very hard and glassy, although a tad on the small size (about 4" x 1 1/4" ) but would be handy little touch up stones.

Ceramic rods used as insulators have been used as a substitution of a butchers rod, as well. In the kitchen knive community butchers rods made of ceramic are widely spread.
They usually do not surpass the 6-8.000 though

You might take a look at the Spyderco hones. I believe that they are made of some kind of ceramic. The ultra fine grit hone, in particular, has a following as a final finishing hone. Personally, I don't care for it, but many do. On the positive side, they are relatively inexpensive.
