Thanked: 6Substitute for barbers hone
Could this be used like a barbers hone? Buy Natural Water Stone 8 x 2 x 1 at Woodcraft

Those, often called the C12k or sometimes the PHIG, tend to be slow and vary in quality. Some make great finishers, others say they are not. I have had 3 and really liked the shaves off each. Any finisher can be used for maintenance, but a slow finisher will take more strokes.
In short, it depends on how you planned to use a barber's hone...

To finish, yes. To refresh, yes, though the number of strokes will depend on how long you wait.
A hallmark of barber hones is that they are fast; these tend to not be. But it can work.

I have one of those PHIGs on the way, I'll let you know how mine "refreshes" in a week or two.

Thanked: 247I think a barber hone would be a good substitute for a barber hone. You can get them for the same price, and the barber hone will do exactly what the barber hone is supposed to do, with no additional hoops to jump through. Well, I guess you might have to clean it up first. You're gonna end up with both anyways, by the time it's all said and done. Both, and then some more....and then a few extras..and maybe another one.

Thanked: 247Yeah, I shouldn't have posted Howard. lol. I was saying just get a barber hone. No reason to complicate things by getting something that "could" do the same thing. Just get the barber hone, cause everybody knows it WILL do the same thing. lol Happy new year to you as well.

Thanked: 6Well never mind I guess, I got an Carborundum Axolite 200 barbers hone. Now all I need is a pasted strop and a Norton 4k/8k.

Thanked: 247You might think about just working with that ALoxite for a couple months, and see what you can make it do before you decide to get some more gear. You might just master that little bugger, and discover that all you needed was some more time, practice, and experience. Ofc, that's a YMMV, IMHO, and FWIW depending on your mileage. :P
