    Default just got Naniwa 12k

I got the one with the stand. It was a gift from my wife. Feels pretty smooth and flat out of the box but I will lap it. Probably going to try it out with one of my razors later. I will have to distract myself from a small coticule which I am currently obsessed with.

You'll be happy with this one. Lap it for sure. It doesn't really take much (especially compared to coticule), usually around 10-15 ultra light laps will produce an awesome edge.

Yet I've seen some claim the Norton 8k is comparable to a 5k Naniwa, makes you wonder doesn't it?....

Many people make that claim because they mistakenly think that the Norton is on the American grit system and the Naniwa is on the Japanese one...
Both are actually rated on the Japanese standard I personally think those grit charts are a detriment to honing

i've heard that 8k norton is as gooda shave that 6k delivers. i never shaved of 6k. I spoke to bob keyes about the nortons. he hones every thing with them. I have brough lots of razors from him. they all shaved nice and plenty smooth enough. He finishers after 8k on a 12k kitiyama synthetic. which is now rated 8k or 10k. he say s the kitiyama makes the tiniest differance over 8k norton. thats all just the tiniest. he says the differance is just enough to tell. i think e uses no more than 20 laps on his finisher.

My battery-thirsty microscope gave me an emphatic NO on the Naniwa 5k = Norton 8k. Still haven't shaved with Naniwaaah 5k but should someday.

The Norton 8k isn't that coarse a hone some people think. Sure, there are other 8k stones that give a nicer polish, for example the 8k Naniwa, but I havent found a synth that was below 8k, and the finish was comparable to a 8k Norton. The 5k Naniwa, and Shapton pro 5k are both below the 8k Norton in term of finish, and final edge too. Both on my face, and under the scope, at least these are my findings
8k and up Naniwas give a very nice mirror polish, and a smooth shaving edge, my favourite synth finishers up to date.

For about a year and a half all i used was a norton 4/8. Diff bevel setters. I used a C12K and a shapton 16k. I had no problem jumping from 8k to 16k. I did do a few extra laps but great shaves. I now have the Naniwas and will be learning them.
