ID dark colored water stone
I got this a few weeks ago. It was pretty worn and glazed over. I lapped one side. Its grey I guess and a little green/yellow possibly. It has some swirls and some black speckles. It seems like a soft stone. The honing surface looks a little lighter grey from several light honing strokes. Original color after lapping was the darker color in the corners. The feedback is soft with a good "sticky" feeling on plain water. The size is about 200mmx40mm(8x1.5)

Is hard to identify from only one picture, if you post more pics , when wet and one more close, if is hard or soft stone, what colour is the slurry, maybe someone can tell you what kind of stone is. I would guess for a Dragon Tongue or some kind of Welsh slate, but can also be a Yellow Lake oilstone or a Thuringian.

Thanked: 21Looks to me like a slate finishing hone. I have one, works like a charm with 30 laps after the coticule.

I don't think it's a yellow lake. Could be a Thuringian. Most of the UK hones with that color are hard enough not to slurry while honing. Almost all dark colored hones I know are hard enough not to produce slurry while honing. How fine is it? Have you bought it from UK? Does it have speckles when held to the light?

I bought it from a seller in the US. It does have little sparkles under the light, like a coticle. And I'm no expert with natural stones (and any stones for that matter) but in a couple of little experiments it seems to polish a little brighter than my vert coticle.

Amazing what experienced people can tell from one picture.
