Default yet another dubious mystery hone thread...

    hey fellas, sorry in advance.

my brother, sweet as he is, came upon the hone in the box and bought it for me (cheaply) not knowing anything about hones or razors...he just knows i have the nortons and that there are lots of highly desirable vintage stones out there. the bout was just something weird i found in my grandpa's garage. both were used with oil (the boxed hone was dark grey/black when i got it...as you can see remnants of in the scooped out middle)...i just spent a LITTLE time with a flatting hone (not enough to make it flat, as you can see) just so i can get a glimpse underneath.

I'm guessing the boxed is some form of arkansas...it's kind of a pale brown (not as orange-ish as the picture would lead you to believe...sorry for the bad light), heavy, very fine (8,000k+ by my estimation), permanently affixed tot the box and has kind of a yellowish slurry (it started out greenish, but got more yellowish the more oil i removed).

the bout, i have no idea...if i see a bout i typically assume coti, but the underside is kind of strange...it's entirely possible this is some form of arkansas as well.

I have no high hopes that I have stumbled on something special...but since it was a nice gesture, I figure I would check with the pros before tossing them.

    Thanks!

I should also add...I've only been honing myself for a few months and am on a self-imposed time of AT LEAST a year with just my nortons before moving on to the world of natural stones...so while i know many of the suggestions/questions may be "how does it cut" etc...i'm not sure I am experienced enough to answer that for you.

I figure after my year-long JaNorton, I will have addressed most of the other AD's so I can dive in to HAD with both feet

My hindostan gives off a yellowish slurry. I don't have enough credentials to wager a guess. But, if you're just gonna throw it away, let me send you my address. Surely the mailbox isn't much further from the house than the trash can.

if it's just a plain old arkansas, i'd will be happy just to send it along to you...if it's something a little more usable, maybe i will just store it away until my year is up

i wondered that...but i also had a norton india stone that my grandfather used for sharpening knives, and that seems a lot more orangeish...this is definitely more light brown (again, the light isn't great). does the india create a yellow slurry as well?

also, were they creating synthetic stones back in the day that this box was used? the box it's affixed in seems to be pretty darn old...

I would agree with the first one looking like an Indian. Second may come from a broken scythe hone.

+1 on the India. I have seen them in different shades of brown, orange ish.
The second looks like a piece of Washita.
