lapping a swaty
I have a swaty and I started to lap it, but it went from a shiny finish to a dull one. Is this normal and if not, what's the proper way to lap it? I've lapped all my other hones, but they were'nt shiny and they came out great. Any help on this would be great, thanks.

The reason it was shiny before lapping is probably because the surface have been polished by use over time, mine was exactly the same, I wouldn't worry about it.
It will get shiny again after some useNeed help or tutoring? Check out the .

I like shiny new... It was unused and I was afraid I'd ruined it.

I lap my Swaty with 800 wet paper and use the same paper to round off the edges a touch. What did you
lap yours with?Bob

What did you lap it with?
The lapping surface will have an influence to the surface on the stone you lap, if you finish lapping on 2k grit paper or a higher grit stone the surface will be finer.
If it was never used I would also think that age would have some effect as well.Need help or tutoring? Check out the .
