Norton 1/4 Hone
I have recently purchased a Norton Quarter hone 4k/8k and found it to be very useful. I have a small collection of straights (7) and find it perfect to keep them all in good shape. Does anyone else have a 1/4 hone and do they like it?

I combined 4 1/4 hones into one and I like it.

LOl. I see your point. I meant does anyone else own one and do they find it useful? I had a full sized one but it made an unfortunate trip down the stairs (dropped it). Funding is limited so I purchased a quarter hone. Just wanted to see if anyone else had any experience using one.

Wait, 1/4 of the hone? That seems... silly. Makes a lot more work of honing, anyway. Smaller hones are the best way on earth to put a frown on a razor unless your 45' x-stroke is just right. Not that it can't be done, just that you have to really know what you're doing.

That's how you do it. X strokes. I still have my full size 1k for bevel setting. I find it to work well but would not attempt if I was a noob. Originally Posted by BKratchmer

I have a soft spot for smallish hones. I like the size of a barber hone in the hand, a quarter of norton would not be that different. But, If I could only have one hone I had rather have a full size.
The quarter of a hone has made me start humming this song.

I only have a couple of "small" cotis and will say i don't like them. In my modest collection of hones I find a full size hone is much better, especially if your expertize does not put you in the honemiester category. Small hones, IMHO , are for when you get more accomplished and are dealing with a razor with special needs(smile,,etc.) I understand they are probably cheaper , but I would recommend waiting to be able to get a full size hone. It will pay dividends in the end. Sometimes cheaper is just that and not worth it. Just my 0.02 and my opinion only.

I was looking at these as a way to get my feet wet with honing. Anyone have experience with the smaller hones?

I aked the same question, "1/4 norton whipped dog razor" I think is the thread. The general consensus was to get full size and make it easy on myself, some replies made me question how dare I try to join the "honing club", which made me question should I even be on this site. But, I don't scare off that easy. I plan on getting the full size set soon. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

You need to understand that SRP is here to help you new guys along the easiest path, not the Cheapest, not the Fastest, not the most Expensive, but the Easiest, now if you don't want to hear that info or accept it then honestly you can keep asking and eventually get the answer that your are looking for.. Sorta like this thread Multiple experienced people saying this is not the easiest solution to honing, and one or two people that are saying it was cheap and it works...
If it is about the cost then no one's opinion really matters, now does it.. Now if you ask, you are always going to get the answer that the MAJORITY of newbs have succeeded in using...
