    To me it looks like a Coticule natural bonded with BBW at both sides and backed with slate. You can't just lap away the BBW layer at the surface because you will reach the bottom layer in no time. IMHO this stone is no good for a beginner because you should only use the yellow part. I personally wouldn't have even bought this at half price.

    Unless I'm wrong and what is showing is not BBW I would advice to return and exchange it for a regular size selected Coticule (bout) with no BBW showing at all. The thicker the Coticule layer the better.

    I know you are just offering your opinion in an effort to help, so please don't take this the wrong way, but I'd like to chime in as someone who loves buying "stained' coticules. Your stone is fine and if used correctly will provide you excellent results in my opinion. As a matter of reference, I've posted one of my own personal favorites that is far from your "standard yellow". Given the chance, I'd buy this stone all over again for even more than I paid. Of course, YMMV.
