    Default Great grandpas old hones.

They have been in a old tacklebox tucked away for the last 48 years. Not till last fall did I find out what they were. My dad told me those were what GGP used to sharpen his razor. The small hone has "Little Devil" on the side but I cant find a name on the large one. I've been using them for the couple of months and they seem to do fine. I havent learned to put a keen edge on my razor with them and I probably never will, lol.. I know they arent anything special, just thought Id show them. Name: IMG00774-20120325-0009.jpg

Your wrong about that. If they are from grandpa they are something special. Stuff handed down through generations is the best. I have my grandfathers razor and although it is a bit on the small side for me I still use it every now and then and it my Honer to do so. Thank you for showing these hones, I love posts like this.

Your right about them being special as a heirloom. What I meant is that the hones probably arent rare or exspensive.

The little one is a American Hone Co. little devil. I had one just like it at one time. Nice little stone, but it was too small for me. Can you lap the big one or is that the color of it? Looks like it has a oily coating on it from the pics.

Thanks for the info matt. Yes the big one is oily, its been soaking in 3in1 oil for know telling how many years. I lapped it and it has a grey color to it. I found out a little bit about it today from my grandpa. He said his dad brought it back from a trip to eastern oklahoma back in the late 30s.

Not good for razors, i dont think, but it is nice to have something from your GGP though.

Im sure its not but I didnt have any control over the oil getting on it. The can leaked out out in the tacklebox.

The Little Devil hone was made by the American Hone company ( now defunct) in Moravia Iowa. The grit used was rated at 4F and it has a very high concentration of abrasive in it. Use it sparingly when touching up your razor, it is a very fast cutter.

Thanks for the info randydance! I doubt I'll mess with trying to use it. I'll let the pro's sharpen my razors for awhile. All I'd do is end up screwing the razors up if I did it.

You are wrong on that one. There are no other hones in world which were used by your GGP and that makes them unique or if you want rare. And with the price? Perhaps they do not have sky high value for other people but if I was in your shoes they would be priceless.
