I am now the proud owner of a thuringian hone. I don't believe it's an escher, but it's damn smooth.
I lapped the chips out of it (up to 2000 grit) and chamfered it, and I gave my razor a few x-pattern swipes on it as I would have with a barber's hone, but I didn't want to do much more to it until I found more information.
It's 1"x5"x1/2" and is in a wooden box (but removeable, the glue has given out).
How should I go about using it properly? Is it merely a finishing hone, or can I use it weekly as I would with a barber's hone to touch up my edge?
It's quite hard, and it take a moderate amount of work to produce a slurry. The slurry is greyish white and translucent with an earthy smell. It's also butter smooth, no surface abnormalities outside of one spot of slight discoloration.
Any info on how to use it?

Thanked: 4249Thuringian are notably soft and produce slurry quite easily. are you sure its a thuri? perhaps post a pic?
Its definately a finishing stone and i use mine coming off and 8k shave ready edge, or 12k naniwa, then the thuri
usually light slurry to water only maybe 25 x strokes.

Perhaps I'm not sure what would be considered easy or difficult slurry. I'm still quite new to this. Here is a picture.

Thanked: 522I'm no expert with the Thuringian but based on what you say, I would recommend that when your razor edge tells you that it need attention, do 5 or 6 laps on the barber hone then 30 very light no-pressure laps with slurry on the Thuri. Strop and shave. Repeat if necessary. Report your results.

Thanked: 2I don't have a slurry stone handy. Is it necessary to utilize the slurry? It seems to cut without the slurry. It put a pretty decent edge after about 12 laps (I think that's how many I did).
Any recommendation on how to raise a slurry without a stone, or where I could get a slurry stone on the cheap?
