    Default Norton 8k color

The Norton 8k I have started off as a dark/dirty looking yellow out of the box then I lapped it and it turned a bright yellow, but now after some use it has some dark/dirty yellow spots on it. Its still flat, but will that affect the stone and its ability to sharpen or should I lap it again.

Sounds like you have some staining. It's probably from the lapping. Try a scotchbrite pad and scrub with some water. it should come off. My 8K is a buff color on the dark side.

Thanks will try that. Was thinking it was just staining, but wasn't sure since it had that color when I got it.

I have the same thing. It stains over time and will brighten slightly after lapping. Don't worry about it as it doesn't affect performence

Depends on the type of staining after using it. If its clean before you start honing, and you find dark streaks on the hone while honing a particular razor, probably means you need more work on your 4000k.

If the staining is after honing a few different razors and in patches, then its probably normal and just needs to be cleaned.

Reading the hones is good way to determine when to move to the next higher grit level. Just my 2 cents.
