Thanked: 0Gentlemen, your opions please. Stone ID
Just lapped a recent purchase. Easily lapped on the belt sander and wet and dry paper. A fine stone but not really a finisher IMHO. Any ideas, I got it because it was a good looker. Unfortunately I am a sucker for naturals. The photos are not great colour wise, but the stone is greenish overall. It feels like a slate stone to me.

Looks somewhat like a Tam O'Shanter, but I'm sure more experienced rock hounds will weigh in soon.

What a beautiful stone, from pics looks like a Lynn Idwall, recently also called Grecian hone, they are finisher , around 12Kin grit range, but if you say your is coarse, I've not idea.
What a shame the crack at the end, but still usable .Last edited by Bushdoctor; 04-03-2012 at 08:12 PM.

Here's the thread about the Grecian labeled stone. I haven't seen another labeled one since. It's a different type than this one.
Here's a thread about this veiny type. As I said in that thread I suspect it's another type of LI but I'm not sure. I think to be sure someone would have to find a labeled one or find a similar stone in the quarry.
I think mine is a finisher, I haven't used it in a while.Last edited by Piet; 04-03-2012 at 11:00 PM.

It's the famous unknown hone. I guess it's a LI variety. If you lap it to a shiny finish, it gets finer. Still, from what I have seen, most of them are very fine but not final finishers.
