Going with my first impression that its a coticule, it iis possible that it was backed recently with slate, perhaps it wasnt backed originally,
where would you put this stone capacities in the progression?

All I know about the stone is that it was my friend's grandfather's. His father is still alive at 92, but doesn't remember anything about it other than it was his dad's. I seriously doubt it has had anything done to it in 60-70 years or more.

I've been fooling with it this afternoon. It is S-L-O-W even with a heavy slurry. (either that or the A J Jordan from Germany I've been using on it is one hard SOB) I set a bevel with the gritty side on a barber's hone and have been trying to remove the scratches left from that puppy. I'd say this hone is more for maintenance than anything else because it doesn't remove much metal.

I got distracted while typing this post and decided to disregard Kelly's advice and ran the blade on the slate for about 20 laps dry. It helped a bunch. I'll strop it and see if it's a razor again after a while.

After attempting a shave with it, it needs a LOT more time on that stone I think.

Back to the drawing board. LOL

I am almost 100% sure its a synth barber hone with slate backing. I had a stone very similar to this, I bought it covered in oil and lather because I thought it is a coti, but it wasn't. It could be something natural too, but I don't think it is a coti.

Looks to me like cast black resin in the back rather than any stone.

From the gouges that were in the slate, it appeared that a square point razor had made a lot trips up and down it.

Tom's grandpa has been dead a long time. Tom's Dad is 93 but like I said earlier he doesn't remember much about his Dad. He does remember that the stone was his Dad's and that he acquired after his Dad died. Tom's grandfather apparently divorced when Tom's Dad was young so he doesn't remember much about him.

The black backing is not any kind of cast material. It has a grain but it is hard to get to show in a pic.

After the slurry wears down and gets thinned, a razor will polish the stone. Right now it feels as smooth as glass and does have some reflection.
