I'm oddly surprised there's not more, although I can't imagine what more you'd need....

Thanked: 4942There are people that have more for sure.
I started culling them a few years ago. All our kids are out of the house and when we moved, we bought a smaller house, so there simply was not enough room for all my stuff. I have been known to pick up a new hone and experiment with it .........
The other thing is that basically I hone razors 4-6 hours almost every day, so it's really in my best interest to find stones that will produce great results as close to 100 percent of the time and stick with them. It is still fun to be able to try out different stuff and I am lucky to have the opportunity to have a ton of razors to test on at all times. I rarely give an opinion on a stone or method without trying it on dozens or hundreds of razors.
Have fun.

IMO this is where people don't understand where you're coming from sometimes. It is not that you are knocking naturals, or to be more specific, coticules ..... rather it is that someone who hones on the level that you do needs consistent and repeatable results, along with timely performance.
Between you honing for people who send razors to you, SRD, among other vendors, I know you don't have the time to fool around, unless you just feel like playing with this or that stone, and I know you do when you have the time and the inclination.
It amazes me that it is still a labor of love and a sport for you. Anyway, all I'm getting at is that honing on that professional level needs stones that are easily replaceable, relatively inexpensive (compared to J-nats or y/g eschers) and fast but giving stellar results. The fun stones get used too but I would guess more for personal use ?
