It's a Welsh hone, a Llyn Melynllyn which means Yellow Lake in Welsh. It can be used with water or oil

Unfortunately, the mine owner used the name of the area as a 'brand' - the problem is that he often used hones from other mines and there are at least four varieties including the original purple slate. Some are very good, some are pre-finishers - hard to tell until you try! As with most natural hones of this type that state 'oilstone' in the description, a fine oil will give a slightly better edge than water.

I use mine as a pre-finisher but that said you could shave off of it, well that my experienced with it, and i use oil with mine.
Can you use it as a finisher, probably you have to experienced with the stone but highly possible.

I have to confirm what Neil already said. I fact stone which comes from the YL quarry is more like novaculite than slate.
Recently I was talking here about special measurements of original YLs can you tell us what exact size is yours?
