    Default Use Naguras with Arkansas

Has anyone ever used a hard Arkansas stone with a Nagura? A good hard Ark has to be similar in hardness to some of the JNats out there, so it stands to reason that you could use them with Nagura stones in a manner similar to how they're used with JNats. Any thoughts?

    Default Yes

There were some tests done with all sorts of bases from Arkies, to plain Glass and polished Granite,,,everything basically comes down to the Nagura and the Talent

I have played around with them with various slurries and artificial nagura on a translucent and find it very interesting. I find that slurries on translucent mimick to good effect the character of the stone the slurry was made of. For example aggresive nortons slurry stone turned the translucent into a very aggresive cutter. A slurry made from an escher cut very similar to the escher and from various Jnats similar to the Jnat itself.

I also tried it with .25 micron CBN(similar to diamond spray) and it delivery a very scary sharp edge. Under magnification it looked like a mirror.

I think the effect is very interesting and might be caused from the slurry particles doing all the work and the arkie be such a slow cutter that it's cutting power is minimal. Also the surface of the translucent appears adapted at locking in the slurries that allow the slurries to cut verses rolling under and in front of the cutting edge maximizing the effect.

I did post about it some time back if you do a search.I did not perfect the process enough to recommend it but played around with it enough to realize it has potential. It is a very useful technique for tools that have small footprints like smaller sized chisels and gouges that would otherwise dig into the surface of softer stones. To make it useful for razors would require a new learning curve.

I am just getting into all the stones and honing but I received a Jnat the other day with a nagura and it works amazing to get a good slurry up. I will be trying out some more stones with the nagura for sure!
