Thanked: 15Norton 4/8 sweating
I used this stone almost 3 months back to refresh a razor and it is still sweating water in it's plastic box!I'm afraid of mould growth on it.Any ideas on how to dry it out?

I never put any hone away until properly dried out.
My reasoning for this is excactly ar yours, mold can occure wherever there is water
That said, the Norton stone cane be stored permanently in water.
If you go that route though, make sure the water is fresh, don't let it sit for months without changing it.
My Norton is dried on the kitchen counter, and is basically completely dry within 24 hours.
I live in an area where the air is pretty dry though.

Thanked: 15I tried leaving it out 24 hrs several times and that did not do it.This part of the year our area is humid but cold & lots of orchards with sprinkler systems going at night to keep the buds on fruit trees from freezing. It may take more time out in the open for it to dry.And yes it will only be getting used to refresh the two razors I have so storage is months on end.

Thanked: 485I've found I've got to dry mine REALLY well, it's gone mouldy before. I found I needed to dry the foam, box and stone outside in the fresh air. I had previously left it on the kitchen bench to dry for up to two days but the packaging was STILL moist when I got it out of the drawer.

You could try storing it in a bucket of water permanently, but be sure to add a TBSP of bleach for every gallon of water, and change the water once a month. Several members here have good luck with this.

Maybe you're working it too hard. Give it a break! All work and no play makes Norton a dull stone.

Hello Pat,
Could you be slightly off on your measurements?
1 teaspoon of bleach sanitizes "5" gallons of drinking water for an extended period of time. 8 to 16 drops for "1" gallon to sanitize.
If my stones are going to be in water for a month (on & off honing) , I put "8" drops of bleach in the container with no problems in the water.
My stones are left to dry in the open , until next honing session. I do not seal up/ store the hones a few days after soaking.
Just my way.Last edited by Hirlau; 05-10-2012 at 01:29 PM.

I WAS way off! One TSP per 5 gallons sounds much more like it. Don't know what i was thinking. Thanks for the correction on that.

It only hit me because, last week I prepped our water supply at home ; getting ready for this year's hurricane season.
