Thanked: 29WOW!
I've been gone for a while. We moved 2 years ago and things were crazy busy and I just didn't have time to pull out the straights and was very frustrated with my lack of honing skills. I pulled the razors out the other day and put them on the hone for another try and still no luck. I decided on one last ditch effort and ordered a DMT 8c, a premium leather I 3" strop, and some chromium oxide for another go. It arrived this morning. My super stones were far from flat I found out quickly. I had lapped them with sandpaper and a piece of glass for 2 years and it took almost 20 minutes per stone to get them flat with the DMT. sharpened up the razor that has given me the most trouble and its smooth as butter! The strop is also amazing. If anyone is having trouble with honing and is flattening their stones with sand paper I have to recommend stepping up to the DMT. It made a massive difference for me.

Welcome back DustinW!
I've been a member here for over three years and have noticed a lot of new info being posted in the past two so things have changed while you were gone.
To help you out on your honing check out some of the videos by gssixgun: gssixgun videos | Watch gssixgun videos | gssixgun online videos | Download gssixgun videos | gssixgun live videos
or you can Google 'gssixgun honing videos'.
He really has a way of explaining things and give lots of very good tips to help you out. As I've stated to a few of the new guys with honing questions, "I've learned more in two months watching gssixgun videos and using his techniques than I learned in the previouse three years"

Thanked: 29I watched the naniwa videos so far since those are the stones I have. I think I need to pick up a 1k and 3k to go with my others. My bevels hold pretty well but they are not perfect and setting them on a 5k takes forever.
Question for GSsixgun if you see this, you had a finger on the toe and looked like your thumb on the heal. There was quite a bit of feedback from the stones as well. How much pressure are you putting down on those blades? Just shy of flexing them? I started using a little more pressure and it helped get things sharper but dont want to overdo it.

Congrats on coming back to the straight razor!!
Nice to hear that one or two little adjustments/purchases can help so much.
I've had the same experience myself, changing out one strop/hone/technique from my progression.
