Stone was covered with some kind of oil, dark smelly. like from some machine or burn out oil from engine when I got it. I want to clean it up before lapping as was impossible to even see what was hidden under oil. pixelfixed are you saying I should not do this?

    Yes,

it worked very well, stone is perfectly clean. I did this as it was one of the options suggested by SRP members and work out very well. Stone is very clean. Now I just need to make it flat and even.

With some stones which are clogged up with crud it is easier to get the crud out of them by thinning it with kerosene and then degrease as usualy.
