Protecting the labels on old hones...something new
After nearly ruining a label on a very old hone , I new there had to be a way to protect the labels. What I don't understand is why people don't do it. I have never received a hone that has been protected in any way. Maby they don't use them.
I did a search on SRP about preserving the labels on stones (Escher in particular) and found a lot of really good Ideas. However I didn’t see anything like I have done and this seems to be the answer, for me anyway.
I used a 2 part resin (shown in background) after using clear fingernail polish.
Look and let me know what you think.

That is fine. I use something called krylon preserve it seen here. I don't know if it is any better, but it is specifically designed to protect documents and is working very well for me. I use it on the back labels. I just use clear nail polish on the end labels. A product called 'Hard As Nails.' Seen here.

Thanked: 334Dear stingray:
This is exactly the reason I'm trying to foster the creation of a Wiki or a library section devoted to pics of original manufacturer instructions for razors, hones and strops. With the passage of time and (mis)use, these historical documents may become lost forever! The first picture you posted very nearly shows the kind of info I'm after.
If you would be so kind, I would greatly appreciate a different photo of both the hone and the box in which the lettering is legible/readable. If this is an idea in which you are interested, please PM me your thoughts on the idea, a clear, legible photo of the hone and its instructions, and any knowledge you have about that particular hone (i.e. manufacturer, date of manufacture, how you acquired it, etc.) Naturally, you would receive full credit of citation in the Wiki/Library section. Thanks!

Thanked: 20I have actually seen first hand the coating that Stingray used on the hones and it is perfect, the labels look very clear and the resin looks wet but is hard, clear and dry to the touch!
