Thread: Mystery hone!

Hi all.
My name is James. I am a cabinetmaker by trade and have been collecting hones and stones for 5 years. I bought a straight razor at an antique store to see if I could get it sharp, and well, started using it. I have only used it a few times. But I like it.

I have a mystery stone here that has been puzzling me for a few years. It is 8 x 2 and sits in half of what I think is a Pike box. The stone is olive green when dry , like a Thuringian, but it is hard as heck, just as hard as Arkansas. It will barely slurry and when it does, the slurry quickly breaks down and just about vanishes. I stupidly cut the slurry stone off- it was 8x2 to begin with. I think it was sold by Pike because of the box, and because of the tearout on the bottom of the stone, I dont know what kind of glue these guys used, but most of the stones from them are trashed on one side. It is a fine grit, somewhere around BBW but if I play it right it is close to the chinese hone. I only have natural stones to compare it to. Is it queer creek? thats what im leaning towards but i hear those are coarse. The first and fourth pics are most color appropriate. Any info would be appreciated!

From pics would say it looks like my QueerCreek. But I have not lapped and used it yet therefore can not comment more.

My Queer Creek is very similar also and the box is almost a perfect match.
My guess on grit rating would be somewhere between 3k-6k for mine, I use mine on kitchen knives. I haven't experimented with it much on razors yet.

Two votes for Queer Creek is good enough for me! Thank you guys. It makes a lot of sense, I think I just wanted it to be something more exotic.
