    Default Micro-abrasive sheets

one of the local hardware chains in Calgary (Lee Valley Tools) have 0.5u chromium oxide and diamond sheets. Do you think that even though the particle size is the same as powders and sprays that they will be too abrasive. If not which would you use crox or diamond.

Diamond will cut faster and last longer. CrOx will make edge smoother.

As far as comparing to paste and sprays you would be honing with edge leading with sheets and stropping with pastes and sprays. You really need to experiment and see what feels best on your face.

Get one or two of each, and try them out. The nice thing about micro-abrasive sheets is that they're not horribly expensive.

Make sure your support is _really flat_. Otherwise, you'll have the same frustrations as you would with a dished or domed hone.

That's what I was thinking of doing as they are not expensive, and I have a block of granite to attach them to.

I have some of the 0.1u diamond stuff and it works very well.

The chromium oxide and aluminum oxide mylar backed films are in my experience, a little harsher on the edge than powder that's on balsa or hard leather (I don't use powders on soft leather, so I wouldn't know what they do there).

But they do make a keen edge. I have a piece of the stuff rmalak is referring to (the .1 micron diamond) but I haven't tried it yet. I have to admit that I'm a little bit hesitant to because i'm afraid of the number of weepers the shave might generate off of a hard backed film that's that fine.

As I'm not currently ready to spend money on stones when I have no idea if I will actually be able to hone my own razors, I've been looking into these microfilm magic thingies. I'm relieved to see that people are confident enough in them to say they work. And based on what I've read here it seems that the CrOx, being the smoother edge is what I at least should look at. Thank you much all for this thread, both it's existance and the views given. It's nice to be able to feel somewhat assured before spending money when you can't yet afford to grab the Nortons.
