Hi guys- I bought this stone last week. It's 3"+ by 7" It's a waterstone puttied into an old pine base. It leaves a hazy mirror finish with scratches in it. Is it possible to identify a stone like this, or should I just leave well enough alone? I am assuming that its Japanese and it slurries relatively easily. looks like a Jnat, but it has to be lapped and the sides cleaned to tell for sure.
Just by looking at a Jnat it is impossible to say what the mine or strata of origin is.
Stone is pretty much lapped... Its got a ding and a nick, etc in the surface but im not going to lap 1/16 off of it just for that. Ill scrub the sides down in a bit...

I think what you got is the canadain stuff.
There are alot of them floating around.
It slurries and takes to water very nicely.
My has alot of cut to it. and a nice smooth edge.
so you did get ya self a nice stone.
bummer my flash changed the color of
the slurry somehow.
I have got a magog theyre a bit different in color and grit but i dont have enough experience to say with certainty that they are not the same stone
And if i may ask how do you know its a Magog? Does it have a label?Quote:

if you could post a pic of the cleaned side of the stone it will be very easy to tell if the stone is a Jnat. The fact it has all that dark spotting on the surface makes me suspicious it is not a Jnat but a side photo will help identifying the rock.Quote:

You are stating the obvious Martin - that is my site and nowhere in the long accompanying description does it say it is a magog stone - only the origin of the stone is 'speculated' at - just speculated. It is what it says on the label, quite obviously enough.

Im totally aware of that Neil and never said that you claimed your stone was a Magog, it is highly possible it is but you can agree that you cant call it a Magog without provenance.I did a lot of research on the magog and continue to do so, its a little irritating to see stones on ebay sold asQuote:

We are in total agreement then, Martin - I just wanted to ensure that I was not a part of 'muddying the waters' like I usually accuse other people to do - it seems we have the same bee in our bonnets about unreliable identification, which is a good thing IMO.

I agree with all of the above. At first, I thought he was trying to skirt something by charging so much on shipping, but after viewing the royal mail page, I see that confirmed royal mail just costs a mint. I wish he would ship more things economy, but I understand with all of the international shipping why he doesn't. I would probably buy a half dozen more stones from him if the stuff would be sent surface mail, but I don't want to go to the trouble to find out if he'll go there.
As far as the names, hopefully most people know there's no free lunch, at least not without risk. Grit ratings - well except the most experienced always overstate the fineness of natural stones. I've never figured out why. There are precious few natural stones with 1/2 micron grit particles and nothing larger...maybe none.
Well i find the "most experienced" like you said dont give a grit rating on naturals at all, and i find that if they do its usually low ball, as far as "there no free lunch" like you said! if i buy a gold chain it better be gold. Seems like perhaps you shouldnt believed everything you read on ebay postings and perhaps buy quality, and correcty identify stones from many "experienced straight razor stone sellers" not on ebay.Quote:

I do think you're attempting to bully the thread and others into the idea that everyone should agree with you, though, and I don't. I like having both types of sellers, and have no interest in a world full of "correct police" who get involved as a third party when not everyone wants them to. Well, I don't know what other people think when they see a listing that says "possible", etc, I can only guess. Personally, someone like AJ, I saw the stones and thought they were too cheap and almost didn't buy them figuring they'd turn out to be dud slow or coarse stones that couldn't finish a razor. I turned out to be wrong, every stone I've gotten from him can finish a razor, though they are a rung below the high priced stones that I have, which are fast, fine and leave a gentle edge. What he has for $50 trumps every other natural finisher I've seen, though, and if that gets people honing their own razors, to me that's good.Quote:
