Thread: Suzuri or ink stone hone

I had some fun this weekend and part of it was getting an ink stone. I know just enough about ink stones to be dangerous but as I looked at it I could see that it was made of slate. Slate can make a good hone and I could lap the bottom of it for a hone. Also it was cheap! I haven't tried to make any ink with it yet but today I lapped it. You can see it the pictures that it still needs some work but I didn't want to spend more time until I decided if it was worth it. It was a little more uneven than I thought. Touched up a razor to test it and it worked good. Not great as it is a little courser than I imagined. It did a good job on three days growth.

I am thinking maybe it would be good for a camper, saving space and multiple use. You could touch up your razor in the morning and practice your calligraphy in the afternoon.
