Thread: Mail box Finds - two German Water hones.

I hope I am not being a post whore with all the hones I have been showing lately. I know I enjoy Hone porn, and hope you do to.

These two arrived in the mail today, I thought I got a steal on them at about 10$ each with combined shipping.

The first one I specifically picked up because it had a label. and that is my thing lately, I want my personal collection to be labeled stones.

On one side it says "German ????? razor Hone -- Celebrated" the other side "Use Water, Lather or Oil Price 75cents"

Edit: this is a natural two sides stone, there are two very thin homes glued together, one side is very fine, the other is about 5000-6000 grit. It's hard to believe they were able to get these natural Hones this thin.





This next one I could tell from the 'bay photos it was a German water hone, but wasn't really expecting much. I picked it up on a whim and because it was cheap. the size is 8 x 1 x 1

Let me tell you though. I am very excited about this hone. I performed my typical 'tooth test" and I will say with that test alone it is the finest hone I own. it feels like glass when rubbing it on my teeth. I compared it to every German water hone I have including a Y/G Escher and although it is close to the Escher, I think it actually is finer grit or at least the same. I am very amazed and can't wait to have time to try it out on a razor.

because I did not want to destroy the label, I only used that small DMT to 'kinda' lap it, basically I rubbed on it for about 1 minute. which really doesn't get it flat. . I really don't want to use clear finger nail polish on the label. so I am going to take my time.... or just leave it alone. (also this was during my lunch break so limited on time)

so what are you thinking? perhaps if I get a good lapping then it might get smoother?

don't tell me you have never tried it!!! and I am all open to other suggestions on how to learn about them. keeping in mind I have been buying alot of labeled hones lately for the sole purpose of education. and because I am nutz. I figure if I have a known labeled version of every hone I can get my hands on. I will be able to better identify the un-labeled ones. but lets just get back to the fact that I am nutz. that would explain most of it.

I can truly say I never have and I don't think I ever will. I could take 'em out and do a few strokes but acrylic loads the hones up fast from what I heard. Nice pair of hones BTW.

Damn. All I got in the mail today was an auto insurance bill and some coupons for Long John Silver's.

Update I finally figured out why this hone is so rough.

It's two sided. If you look closely there is some kind of wood or glue or something in the center covered by the label. You can actually see it to the right of the 75 cents the stones them selves are only 1/8 thick, I am trying to remember what stones are typically cut this thin, Hunsacker? I believe?

I finally figured this out after another tooth test. And for the record I don't actually grind on my teeth, I barely touch it on them with just the lightest pressure.

Also, this long one in the 2nd set of photos has me really intrigued, I am absolutly amazed at the extra fine grit, it is most definetly slate type BTW. The one odd thing about it is how shiny it is, I lapped it on a DMT 325 and this thing is glossy shiny. I am comparing it to the other 9 slate style homes I have and after playing with it more, I am still convinced it is of the highest quality from them all. That's what's great about naturals, the mystery of it all

Tooth test very interesting, I use my lips. When a stone is lapped and polished the fingers have a hard time telling the difference but the lips can tell distinct fineness. Your method reminds me of the cartoons where a guy would bite a gold coin to see if it's real, I may just try it. Now I have to get the timing right so a stranger sees me nawing on a rock. lol
