Thanked: 66Salmen Yellow Lake vintage
Just hit the button on this from the bay. The price was right soo I HAD to do it...
I do have a number of stones that "I say" are unlabeled German water stones, but who really knows. Perhaps after this arrives I can use it as a reference in my collection for identification of the unlabled stones. I hope anyway..
Off to google more info.. :

Salmens Hone
As well as operating the Melynllyn Yellow Lake Hone Quarry, and being the UK's largest importer of Turkey Stones, this company also retailed a dark-blue slate hone under their own name. The label depicts the Salmen's logo of a fish and an S inside an inverted red triangle, underneath this there is a picture of Britannia and script stating "Made in England".
slate is easy to I.D when lapping it give off a distinctive smell. you wont be able to I.D german water hones with this slate hone they are different hones.

Thanked: 66I was meaning that I might be able to separate out some of my unlabeled "slate stones". Just cause I think they are German, it's kinda hard to tell. But if I have a English labeled slate stone, and then my other labeled German slate stones, I might be able to do some comparison on the unlabeled slate and be able to 100% identify some of them... That's what's was meaning,..
I also have a cutlers green on it's way...
And thanks for the info...

Cutlers Green. Along with HHT, tape and Gold Dollars, some of the more controversial subjects on SRP.

Thanked: 66I don't know much about it to be honest. Doing a trade with another SRP member. I guess I was unaware of any controversy on them. I have only done limited google foo. And never really heard or read anything about them in SRP... Hmmmmmm interesting, It just looked cool...

There isn't really a controversy on Cutler's Greens. They were mentioned in old books and no active member knows for sure how they look like. An UK Ebay seller has been selling "possible" Cutler's Greens but everyone knows his naming is BS.

Thanked: 66Yes....Trying to get labeled stones, but I will pick up anything at a flea market or garage sale though.. And my sister is an antique dealer and picker, so I have her and my family along with some other Pickers and myself looking, and let's not forget cheap eBay BIN's...
So I do get a lot of new stuff all the time, most is not labeled,,,,
Back to this cutlers green issue. I guess I am going to have to do a forum search to figure out why you guys are making a big deal about it... It just sounded cool which is the extent of my knowledge of it.Last edited by sidmind; 08-19-2012 at 06:34 PM.
