this is a 1k that is about 4 months old. It is cracking lengthwise from each end at center and from one side in about the center. It is stored dry, never been dropped while in my possession. This was not noticed until today...Kinda hard to miss.

I'd argue manufacturing flaw - try contacting your original vendor for return and replacement. Not sure how much success you'll have, but that would be my first step.

And no, I have not experienced anything like that on any of my hones. Though it is something I would expect to see as a result of mistreatment, or as I said manufacturing defects.

I've had those lines pop up on my Chosera 10K, and at the tiniest level on my 1K.
The reason in my case was too much soaking before honing..
I still use them both though to no ill effect, but I'm much more cautious about soaking them more than just a couple minutes before I use them.

+1 to what Birnando said. Dylan also had some cracking going on with his chosera 1k. I have a cho 1k too and so far no problem. I'm real careful about only soaking it for the 15 minutes and then air drying and putting away when done.

I am feeling better now. All the heavies agree. Uh oh...that is sometimes a warning sigh...

They are affixed to a base, then use them as long as you can.

if they come loose from the base, glue them to quartersawn water-tolerant wood with epoxy and keep using them. No big deal if they don't catch a razor and ding up the edge.

I have one ceramic stone 6k with the entire surface of the stone covered by those lines. The performance of the stone has not changed. And, for the record, I forgot it for about 20' wet. It wasn't a brand stone. I lapped it, but they are appeared again, and this time I was taking even better care of it.

I have had it happen with a 10k Chosera - although it didn't affect honing I had paid so much for it that I'm afraid I got a bit pedantic and insisted that the seller exchange it. The replacement is now about 6 months old, and has very fine lines along the edges, but I suppose I can live with that. I haven't noticed it with the 1k, 3k and 5k that I have.

If my 1k looked like yours I would get a replacement - those lines are far worse than I experienced with the 10k. I did read about a guy on another forum who had a chunk fall off one of his choseras - if you get another line coming in from the side...

I never soak mine - I just put a puddle of water on the top, run a diamond plate over them, add more water and begin honing, so I'm not convinced that it is an excess of water take-up that causes the cracking. They aren't dimensionally stable - much better than the shapton GS hones, but they still move about a bit according to how dry or damp the prevailing weather is - I can lap them after use (which I don't do anymore as it is counter-productive in my case) then darken the surface and lap again the next morning before use, and low/high spots will be evident, but in different positions each day. Interestingly, if I go away for a week or two the dimensional change is far less pronounced.

I have a 16 and 30k shapton, the GS versions, and these have developed rather longish lines at the short edges, but it doesn't affect honing at all. They do change shape far more than the choseras though, although some people report not noticing this. Perhaps it is something to do with how frequently they are used - I use mine everyday, so maybe they never get the chance to dry thoroughly. Like I said above, after a holiday they seem OK. Strange. Perhaps they need a rest

    Regards,
    Neil

Funny that you mention the Shaptons. After not using them for a while I went to clean them up lightly and found they were high in the middle. Actually I use the steelex stone holders and I thought they might just be to tight but contrare...they ended up worse after removing them from the steelex holders.

" Perhaps they need a rest" Yeah...nothing worse than a tired shapton...
