Naniwas question
I was doing some practice honing using my naniwas, are these stones less aggressive compared to the norton 4/8k?
I dream of a world where a chicken can cross a road without having it's motives questioned.

Yes, I think so (I have Naniwa SS 3k & 5k, the Norton 220/1000 & 4k/8k (4k is not usable)). When my 4k was working it was definitely faster.

Thanked: 13249In the 4k range the feel is very different, not so different at the 8k range
Now whether the grit and cutting power is all that different I am not so fast to admit that, the feel is so different you have to really look at the striations to make that determination.. I will say that regardless of which I am using, I use apoximently the same amount of laps off the Chosera 1k for the Naniwa 3/8 or the Norton 4/8Last edited by gssixgun; 09-19-2012 at 03:32 PM.

I still have and use the nortons. I like 'em best. I had the naniwas and I liked them too. I liked to use the 1k, 3k, 5k and 8k. They were really effective stones IME. From memory I can't recall them being less effective or slower than the nortons. I sold my naniwas and shapton pro sets because I like the feel of the nortons best. The super stones are plenty good though.

My 4k has micro pits that have swarf lodged in them that destroy the delicate edge of a razor. It happens enough and so dependably that it is unusable for my honing needs. The first few layers were okay, I had the opposite problem from others. My combo (4k/8k) was made in Mexico, purchased back in early '08. It has been eaten away at by a belt sander and the problem persists, it is a truly accursed 4k.
