check this hone
This post describes a Welsh stone/piece of slate obtained from the British Isles in an old quarry named the Penrhiw Home Quarry Mill.
The stone was provided to JimmyHad of West Palm Beach, Florida, by a person called Jason01, on Straight Razor Place Forum, around February 2009. JimmyHad held this stone-slate until October 31, 2011. On this date I obtained this stone fron JimmyHad.
This Welsh stone came in rough, basically not finished for honing, condition. I had this stone cut and shaped on November 9, 2011 at Meteor Granite & Marble Company, 311 Ansin Blvd., Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. The person who cut the stone was the business owner Zulton.
Upon returning home, I lapped the stone flat with a DMT 325 & wet sanding paper up to 1200 grit.
I found the slurry to be easily created. The slurry has a light green milky look to it.
I worked a total of three razors on it.
I put the grit around 4000. My edge improved greatly after the Norton 8000.
The stone light green with white clouds of scale in it. It measures at 9" x 1 5/8's"
There is a good posibility that this stone came from the location of the photos taken.
If anyone has more information on this stone, please contribute.
Below are photos involving this stone.
......more photo coming.

Is similirar to this one that I have, but mine is not so coarse,I rate mine around 12 K and is a very hard stone, I've guess it was a green Charnley, but I'm not sure.In the second pic is compared to a Grecian Hone on left side and a mysterious stone at right side.

Hirlaue, the flaking of your stone is characteristic for Llyn Idwals as well as the speckling.
Bushdoctor, I think yours is a LI but just with a darker tint.
The Grecian labeled LI posted in this forum was rated pretty coarse as well. The finest "Grecian" LI I have, a slurry stone, could be around 12k.

Thanked: 202To Hirlau. Yes your hone is from Penrhiw Hone Quarry which is on Moel Siabod mountain. The picture is in fact old cutting/dressing house/mill which was powered by near by stream. The quarry itself is situated about 400yds away. The picture is relatively old as at present there are no trees around anymore as they were felled about year ago.
To Buschdoctor your middle hone is not CF it is looks morew like Hirlau's hone. Your mystery hone looks like hone which was quarried in Llyn Melynllyn Quarry (THE REAL QUARRY DO NOT MIX UP WITH LM?YL HONES!)
If you will be patient I believe Margeja will soon put together more information about welsh hones and these two quarries should be in.

What ? There are two kind of Llyn Melynllyn ?
Oh, now I have understand, one is LM quarry (mine) and the other is LM hone stones.
Therefore the LM /YL aren't quarried in LM quarry.
Thanks for info mate.Last edited by Bushdoctor; 09-29-2012 at 11:07 AM.

It's not going to be easy to keep the Penrhiw Hones apart from the LIs
