    Default Next hone?

I'm looking to step up to the next level with my edges. I currently have a Norton combo 4k/8k and one Swotstein barber hone. Would you recommend something like a 12k Naniwa or a Coticule for a finisher?

I doubt you are going to step up from your 8k Norton by getting a coticule. The edge will be different for sure, but you are not going to be moving up in grits if that is what you are after. IMO next step to take is 12k synthetic.

Myself personally, I would go all synthetic until you are "done," then give naturals a go. I say that because I didn't, and until you master one type, it kind of gets a little confusing... but then others might be quicker than me .

The Naniwa 12K is highly thought of... but I rather like my 10K as well.

I would also recommend the naniwa 12k or the shapton 16k glass stone. OTOH, I would avoid going above the 8k until you are able to achieve a comfortable shaving edge at that level. If you are leaning toward a coticule wait until you have the synthetic mastered and then go to a coticule with the experience you've gained with the synthetics. Just IMHO.

I have achieved a comfortable shave on several razors off of the Norton 8k which is why I was pondering the Naniwa. Honestly my main reason for curiosity of the coticule world is mainly that I am drawn to old/odd things, basically I just think they look neat and wanted to try one.

Well then I think you should get a Coti too lol!! I love my Coti's! That said, the Naniwa really is the practical choice - but practical doesn't always = sexy lol.

I second the suggestion for Naniwa 12K or Shapton GS 16K, they both give a very nice, pretty similar edge, the Naniwa maybe a little bit more mellow.

Naniwas are great. You can also go with a dragons tongue/lynn mel. Spelling is off but there great stones and great price

Naniwa 12k is a better choice for those learning to hone IMO.
I am probably the biggest advocate for Shapton GS's...but i feel they are less forgiving.
