Thanked: 0Honemeister in Chicago
Hello everybody,
I'm definitely new to this whole Straight razor thing. I was able to buy a set of Norton honing stones. I tried to learn to hone with Youtube videos, but I just keep getting the feeling that I am doing something wrong. I am the only person that I know that shaves with a straight razor so I've never seen all of the maintenance processes done live.
Does any honing and stropping expert live in the Chicago area? Would you be willing to help? Maybe we could get a bunch of guys together and do a mini-educational seminar.

Thanked: 1Congrats on joining the straight razor brother, and or sisterhood...My wife shave her legs with a straight. How long have u been shaving? I only ask because it's a good idea to get proficient at shaving and stropping before u jump into honing. I'm in northwest Indiana but I am new at honing as well. If u can't find someone to show u how to hone I would recommend gssixguns or Lynn's videos on honing. They have been a tremendous help to me. And don't get discouraged, honing is a long journey. Just take your time and enjoy the sights.
Good Luck
Richard

Thanked: 0I have been straight razor shaving for 2 years now. I have really loved my shaving experience, however my razor has been getting dull. I have tried to hone it a few times, but I don't have any experience to compare to in order to see what a good shave really feels like.

kngo, You may hear this alot, but that face to face time Lynn recommends is hard to overstate. You can learn more in a day than months of reading, watching and practice. If there's anyway you could attend, it would be of incredible help. I've only been to one, had done 178 blades at that point. That day helped move me to the next plateau in edges.
I'm so convinced of the value of those gatherings, I recommend anyone new quickly identify who the honemeister is, and stick to him like glue as guys find seating - this is so you can sit close enough to see and hear what's going on - and to ask questions. You won't believe how helpful it is.

Thanked: 0Thanks for the replies everyone. I think I'll actually be going to the Great Shave. I just signed up for Lynn's stropping and honing session.
