My $0.02 = give the superior stone (in your estimation) to your rookie friend.

Imo they both do the same job.

I have been sucked into that as well as a few other Swaty threads ever since this thing arrived. To be honest I may subconsciously be giving one away to end the confusion!

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.

I like your idea of sharing, and for that you rock. Thats what this passion is all about. Many people hoard this stuff away never in 10 lifetimes could ever use it all. Whats the fun in that? Those barber hones will each out live us all and then some.
The joy in this obsession is to pass on the knowledge as well as a hone or maybe a razor now and again.

I agree! A REALLY good friend would first give him the one with a corner off. THEN he would feel bad about shortchanging a buddy and give him the other one too! THEN the buddy would forever be your bitch because you gave him EVERYTHING! Yeah, that's the ticket!
"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
    I rest my case.

Gooner, please detail how your friend went about asking you to GIVE him something. I am just as broke as the next guy and try to be a really nice person but I've never been able to convince anyone to GIVE me anything I'm just wondering what technique he used on you? Thanks and please share

    Well, I guess I'm just a contrarian...

The consensus was either to keep the three line, or that it really didn't matter. So I'm keeping the two line. My reason is simple: as an historian I appreciate the historical quirk of placing Marburg in "Austria". So, since the consensus is that they are more or less the same in terms of performance, and since they are in nearly identical condition, I decided to hang on to the one with the one with the historical.geographical quirk.

I was brought up with the idea that, if you going to share, you give the best or biggest or nicest to the other person, and keep what's left for yourself.

In this case it seemed like it was a little tricky to determine which was "better", but sounds to me like you made a good call in the end.

You're right - if one was clearly better it would have been easy (I was taught the same as you)
