Use polished convex part of spoon, make few pases on the stone and check for scratches. For simmilar job you could use ols casing from ball bearing but spoon is easier to get. Once scratched can be easily repolished to original nick. If you have any doubtfull patches go over and you will see any impurities scratching out of pattern. Good luck

You've never worked on a rock face or overhang and had a ton of rocks come down especially on a grade. I can attest from personal experience rocks can run very fast, faster than you.

I plan to take it pretty easy! There are a few spots on the shore of the Bay of Fundy and the rivers/streams in the area south of the bay. If anyone is interested, here is some info:
    http://www.gov.ns.ca/natr/meb/data/p...01_18White.pdf

I live in the light green area that's labelled as being sedimentary and volcanic rock

If you search the article for 'slate', you'll find info on the various colors and a little about the rarity of the occurrence of the color in the province.

Yea natural rocks are sweetest make things sharp.
when i hone up my razors i go 2k water stone 5k waterstone.
coticule then a clear arkansas stone. Then strop the blade on linen
then just leather no pastes and it seems sharp.
takes the hair off my arms with out torching the skin.
So i guess their nothing better then natural rocks.

I use the ol' spoon test too. You've started something that has had me going for a while too, I have geological surveys of Newfoundland all over the place! Best I've found is some purple slate near Twillingate Newfoundland, Very good finisher!

Good luck on your hunt, have fun climbing around the woods picking up rocks and getting strange looks when you rub them with spoons...

Thanks a lot! With all this talk of natural stones, not only did I spend a bunch of time trying to see if there's any slate near Ottawa (plenty of shale but no slate as far as I can tell so far), but now I'm also going to get impatient waiting for my Zulu Grey to arrive.

EDIT: Seriously though, it would be wonderful to find something local that would work - best of luck in your search!

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

I've found this company North Country Slate | Slate Roof & Natural Roofing Shingles
They sell many kinds of slate for roofing.
What do you think if some of their roof tiles will work for razors too?
