    Default Need some help please

I am in need of a barber hone. I have looked on the bay and after doing some searches I see that there are some available. I have a few problems though..
First is I would not know a good name or company from a bad one.
Second it seems that the prices are to inexpensive or really expensive.
Third there are not many to choose from..
Since there is no way that I can get a set of honing stones right now due to financial reasons, and also I know I am not ready for that kind of undertaking just yet, this is one of the few options I have right now.
So since they are not really listed in the classifieds and I have searched the forums and it seems the only name i come up with is Franz Swaty can anyone either give me some links to sites that offer them. Some general prices on them so I don't get reamed when the time comes. Or possible can anyone here that can part with one for a reasonable price it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks to any and all who reply.

There are a few really good threads here on SRP about Swatys in particular. For example:

    Swaty Provenance

    Franz Swaty Barbers Hone

There are loads of other too - those are just a couple I recalled that jumped out in my search results. There are of course plenty of barber hones other than Swatys, but I know next to nothing about them as I only have a Swaty.

I think they do come up from time to time in the classifieds. But in addition to there and ebay, have you tried antique stores? I've never found one in an antique store, but it seems some guys manage to find hones in great shape for very cheap. If you do go the ebay route, keep an eye out for chipped edges. You'll want to smooth those out when the hone arrives if there are any chips.

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Sorry to say but antique stores are few and far between in queens NY.. When I searched the forums that was the predominate name that came up..I know that there has to be others but I just don't see any details listed about other brands very often..

Even still prices are subjective and I don't have any reference to whether or not if I would be over paying even if I did find one

    aespo,

Always look in our classified section first, there are great deals there from trusted sources.
There is an SRP member selling a pair in the classified section. They are good hones & appear to be in great shape. The price is a good one also, just that there are two of them. Talk to him, about them.

I hope I didn't violate any rules on this post, I'm sorry if I did.

You might also shoot a PM to fellow member LarryAndro of WhippedDog--he's who I got my barber'shone from, and I think he usually has a few available. Mine's a no-name travel size barber's hone, but it does a great job for me. I haven't had to send a razor off to be honed since I got it over a year ago.

Another cheap alternative is lapping film. Plenty of info about it on here.

Buying sharpening stones off the ebay is a costly and pricey addiction.
but well alot least i resold some manmade stuff i didn't want for
    a few bucks.
Some time when i avalible and don't have work that day.
if ya have a car i guess ya can come up to orange country new york.
and try a whole lot of rocks. but i wouldn't sell any of them.
though wait for the hurrican to past.
    It's a addiction hoarding them.
with natural rocks you cann't tell if they are good from pictures.
