It must likely means it's softer then must german stones.
i think i saw that one too on the ebay.
it's addictive shopping and buying off ebay.
like when stuff gets paid for with the ebay bucks and the cash back.

Is it possible it is related to the Fox #44 stones?

I thought that was the case but why then write 44?
As Mainaman points out does it have anything to do with the 44 fox stone?

What interested me about that stone was the 44 soft label didn't have the usual border escher put around their end labels. I have seen a few with "Guaranteed Soft" on one end and Gelb-Gruhn or Yellow Green on the other end. Both labels having the border , IIRC with E&Co in the center at the bottom in small print. I think it means that a soft hone is preferable to some, perhaps because it cuts faster ? Here is an old post with examples of end labels that I'm talking about.

You have a true point there the label I saw did not have the boarder nor the E&co on it but the other end had the standard gelb grun

It piqued my curiosity but IIRC it did look like it was as old as the stone. Maybe the vendor, way back when, put it on there or it was an escher label before they printed one with the more familiar border ? I've seen eschers with the signature on the back label warning against buying imitations with no signature.

By the same token I've seen a presumably older escher with the correct back label but no signature. I know absolutely that stone is the real deal, which is why I presume it is older than those with sigs ..... so ..... anyone who knew for sure what the story was is long gone now.
