Thread: Newbie with a coticule

Awesome dude. I just got my first coticule yesterday. 200 x 40. Put a nice edge on a 7/8 Rich Abr. Herder that had gone out of shavability.

Something I noticed, fresh coti edges are super sensitive to good stropping technique. I'll go from hht1 to hht3 from just 60 linen and 60 leather.

You guys are awesome. I went back with a little slurry and circle strokes as suggested above and the razor is hair popping sharp. This coticule is a lot of fun and it's really cool how the dynamics of the stone can be changed with just a little slurry. Thanks again everybody!

This is just why i love coticule, so versitile and once you get to know your stone very easy to use and smooth edges from it.

I've been using circles with coticules as resent and i find they work extremly well, even finishing with circles works exallant as apose to the traditional; x stroke, i also finished with light tint of slurry and the edge is real smooth just like butter ... even after 5 years of using coticules i'm still learning and using differant methods that seem to amaze me.

Used the circle method yesterday too with great results. I'm looking forward to the shave test with that razor.

which razor was that mark?? the edwin jagger? How did you find using citrcles as apose half strokes. I like both ways but i do find circles more comfortable ?

Indeed it was the Edwin Jagger, found using the circles very comfortable to use. Will see how the shave goes tomorrow.

Congrats on your new stone! I too am a newb learning the Coticule; I've had mine for about a month now. You'll find that playing around with slurry dilution & varying pressure will greatly influence the end result (which hopfully is a smooth edge!). Once you get those elements dialed in, you'll be getting nice mellow edges in no time!

I too use circles when honing on the Coti (actually long, elliptical motions). I find it to be much more fluid & smooth as opposed to half strokes. Just experiment & you'll find what works best for you.
