Had lots of fun today honing...
I got my DMT lapping hone from SRD today in the mail and I got my hones lapped and in better shape. They were less than flat and the norton lapping stone just would not do the job. After that I took my razors through the 40 circles and then on through the progression on 4K then 8K norton and 12K Naniwa then the crom oxide then cotton webbing then red latigo.
I am super excited about my shave in the morn. I am still a novice but out of the 5 razors I got honed at least 1 one them should be shave ready!Last edited by krisbarger; 12-05-2012 at 01:58 AM. Reason: typo

I also spent the afternoon today practising my first solo honing a 6/8 sheffield blade and am not happy with the results.
Bevel set on 1K chosera, followed by Norton 4/8K circles as per GSsixgun/Lynn Abrams.
Even after stropping it does not "pop' hair on my arm....
Should I start again as I did not generate a slurry on the Norton 4/8, just used water.

You may have not spent enough time on the 1k. I ran into similar probs when I first started, and I found out that it was because I wasn't using enough pressure when bevel-setting. Sometimes, depending on the condition of the blade, you really need to 4-5 sets of circles with Firm pressure on the 1k, before progressing to the 4k. Also, you'll want to throw in a set of moderate-pressure circles right before going to the 4k. At least that's my experience. You really should be able to pop hair coming off of the 1k, so I would return to the 1k & maybe give it a little elbow grease.
Have no fear, you'll get it!!Last edited by jpcwon; 12-05-2012 at 05:12 PM.
