Thread: Is this a coticule?

There's a stone on the UK ebay at the moment, which is described as a coticule, but doesn't look like any of the other photos of cotis I've seen:

It isn't worked or backed with another type of rock, it's quite natural looking.

I'm not going to bid on it, I'm just asking out of idle curiosity. (I may get a coti eventually, but not for some time I think.)

pics are bad quality but it more looks like a Jnat than coticule, but who knows

If you scroll down you see all the pics enlarged, that said i think it is a coticule but its way to small in my opinion 10cm X 5cm. For the asking money on this stone you can get a lot larger stone then this one for sure.
Despite what the seller claims meaning rare , there nothing rare about a coticule still mined today.

i cann't make up my mind if i should bid on it.
cause the thing it has going for it is how it's is custom made for that stone.
what it has going for it is just how theirs not cuts on the sides to make it perfectly sqaure or the back side.
When a stone is shaped to flawless or perfectly i just don't want to bid serious money to get it.

Being that ya gots to read info to see it don't come with the razor.

It is hard to tell. The top looks like it could be a coticule or maybe an Arkansas to my eye. The sides are so dirty that they mask the true color. Here is a pic from Ardennes Coticule , taken a few years ago, of some of their stock at that time. Just for a possible comparison. I guess these pieces have gone through some finishing procedure. Some of them do appear to have a skin on the sides.

Really looks like an old vintage coticule.

Those stones belonged to the standard equipment of carpenters and joiners for example in germany in older times. They were used to sharpen chisels and knifes.
Because of their irregular shape and size they are called “Brocken” in german.
Attached you will see a couple of this typical handstones.



The back sides are typically not planed.

I would also say it is vintage Coti from LOOONG time ago. Not much use for razor honing due to size and even for collection is too expensive.

when i visited ardanees there was chunks of coticule lying all over the place just like that one ..
