Thread: nanawa 10/12k

just tried out my new stones 1/3k and a 8k nanawa,i had to reset the bevel as i could not get a edge on the 8k,i took me blooming ages to finish it on the 8k but i think that was because i was using way to much water think swimming pool.
i got it to a stage when it was popping arm hair when pushed on the skin,so i stropped it up and tried it out,fairly pleased with the result i got a close and fairly comfortable shave and it is way better than it was.but it is no where near as sharp as some of the vids you see on here,and there was a small amount of friction at times if I’m honest
so my question is should i buy a 10/12k nanawa,or save my money and practise more on the 8k

You can Get a comfortable, close shave with a razor finished on 8k then stropped on leather.

If the 8k isn't working then you need more work on the lower grits. A 12k won't help your situation IMO.

After 1k the razor should pop arm hair at skin level like a breeze.

A razor finished on 8k should be ready for a shave. If you let it touch arm hair at all then it should cut above skin level with no pressure.

Yeah, I would say that your goal (at least initially) should be to learn to get a shave ready edge off of the 8k, then worry about finishing stones after that. I made the mistake of buying a Naniwa 12k because I didn't think my 8k was giving a good enough edge. As it turns out, I should've been looking BACK in the progression (bevel set? 3k OK?) instead of forwards (12k..)...

In short, you really should be able to get a shave ready edge off of the 8k if the previous steps in your progression were completed properly..

cheers,i can shave ok with it,but it is not as sharp as i was expecting,will go back to the 3k and start again

well it looks like i had the 1/3k the wrong way round
so i started on 3k then went to 1k then 8k doh
re did it again and it is better
does the 8k need a slurry stone as it did not seem to do a lot

they don't need a slurry the 8k is only a polisher . make sure they are lapped between honings.I found when they get swarfed up they slow down and loose performance just lie nortons etc....try lynns circle method its on utube he does the method with nortons shapton and naniwas .
